I.M. Pei: Complete Works
by Philip Jodidio
from Rizzoli
When I. M. Pei was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1983, the jury said he had "given this century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms." I. M. Pei: Complete Works, the first and definitive survey of the master architect, attests to this statement by showcasing Pei’s transcendent, sculptural forms in over fifty projects and more than 300 illustrations, culminating in the last works he is currently completing. Often working in a spare geometry with a palette of stone, concrete, glass, and steel, Pei—who began his career pioneering public housing projects in New York City—has taken his vision of modern architecture across the globe with commissions in locations as diverse as Quatar, China, Luxembourg, Japan, and Germany. Meanwhile, major projects such as the JFK Library in Boston and the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., have made him a household name in the United States.

This digital document is a journal article from Environmental Modelling and Software, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Presenting environmental information to the public with the intention of enhancing the understanding of the environment and promoting environmental awareness requires the creation of dedicated types of environmental information systems (EIS). This paper presents concepts for the structure, contents, and implementation of such EIS for the public, with the ''Theme Park Environment'' (http://themenpark-umwelt.baden-wuerttemberg.de/) serving as an example. The Theme Park Environment has been developed by Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and the State Institute for Environmental Protection for the Ministry of the Environment of Baden-Wurttemberg. It contains information about soil, geology, and nature and interlinks this environmental information with other topics, such as local food production, historic site information, and environmental policy to increase the interest of the users. The system uses concepts of content management and multimedia systems with map server technology and database-driven structured information access for combining structured environmental information, location-based information, and text and multimedia contents in integrated Web pages. By means of an embedded ontology-based system, authors can relate different parts of content objects with each other and with multimedia contents, maps, fact information in databases, and other description parts. In this way, information within the Theme Park Environment can be reorganised dynamically and contents can be reused and shared easily.

The Exhibition Hall of the German Historical Museum by I.M. Pei
from Prestel Publishing
This fascinating, detailed examination of renowned architect I. M. PeiÂ’s spectacular new wing of the German Historical Museum in Berlin is published to coincide with the unveiling of the extension in 2003. The stunning glass building, with its triangular footprint and seemingly weightless curved staircase, offers a striking departure from the museumÂ’s older structures, and plays an important role in BerlinÂ’s current architectural and cultural renaissance. Pei, in effect illuminating history with his design, provides an optimistic footnote to this important European institution, and a refreshingly simple and elegant annex to the museumÂ’s more ponderous main buildings. Essays from renowned architectural scholars comment on PeiÂ’s design, provide a history of the Arsenal building and site, and place the Show House in context with the architectÂ’s other important museum structures, including those built for the National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the legendary Glass Pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre.
